U.S. Mid-Amateur qualifying is set to commence at Spokane (Wash.) Country Club on Friday, August 1, as players will look to earn the one available spot of this qualifier into the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship, to be held September 6-11 at Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, Pa.

The Washington State Golf Association (WSGA) is the local representative of the United States Golf Association (USGA) and conducts this qualifier for the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship.

Notable players in the field at Spokane include Bjorn Bjorke of Port Orchard, Wash. the reigning Washington State Mid-Amateur champion; Kent Brown of Colville, Wash. who is a past champion of the Washington State Senior Amateur, and who qualified for last year's U.S. Mid-Amateur; Jeff Sweat of Spokane, who also qualified for last year's championship; and Jimbob Colemand of Billings, Mont. and Mark Mance of Whitefish, Mont., both of whom qualified for the championship in 2012.

This year marks the 34th U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship. Entries for the 2014 U.S. Mid-Amateur were open to players who have reached their 25th birthday by September 5, 2014, and who have a USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 3.4. The championship proper consists of 36 holes of stroke play qualifying, held on September 6-7, to determine the 64 players who will then compete in single elimination match play to determine the champion. Champions of this event earn an invitation to the Masters.

The U.S. Mid-Amateur is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the USGA, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
